Running During Covid: The Do’s and Don’t’s

Running is the best exercise for anyone. Whether the sun is shining, it’s raining, one should exercise every day. And during a pandemic. You can still run amid the pandemic, but you have to be more careful. Get your mask out, start warming up, and listen to these do’s and don’t’s of running during Covid.

DO: Run on Your Own

It’s okay to do something on your own. Nobody is going to judge you. A little time to yourself is good for you. Getting out of the house is good medicine. Breathe in the fresh air. Running helps clear your mind of miserable thoughts.

DON’T: Run in Large Groups

Running in large groups is an easy spreader of Covid. Don’t run with people that you have never been in contact with. Stay safe, and stick to running on your own.

DO: Wear Your Mask

Never forget to wear your mask when you go for a run. Always consider wearing a mask if you think you’re going to be around a lot of people. If you don’t think that you can run with a mask on, take one with you anyway. You never know who you might bump into. Have your mask on hand if and when you are going to be around people.

Masks keep you safe. Wear a mask that is not hard to breathe in. Experiment with different face coverings to see which one works the best.

DON’T: Run in Busy Areas

Parks. Towns. Any place that has a lot of people. Stick to areas that are not as busy. It’s also not fun to run in crowded areas where you have to stop every few minutes. Pick a desolate area. Try running in the evening hours. Yes, it is dark outside but there are fewer people around.

DO: It’s Okay to Wave

Manners don’t disappear during a pandemic. Just because we are all social distancing does not mean that you shouldn’t acknowledge people as you run by. Although you are smiling, they can’t see that behind the mask. Politely wave. It’s a nice gesture.

DON’T: Break the Rules

Pay attention to where you can run. Are there certain hours that you can run? What places are off-limits entirely for people to gather and take a run. Although the world has changed with its restriction, kindly go along with them and don’t break the rules. It’s better to stay safe than get in trouble.

DO: Take a Break

Running is a wonderful exercise but you should never over-exert yourself. If there is a place that you can rest, take a breather, reflect, and enjoy the view. Make sure that you maintain a distance of 6-feet if you are in a crowded area.

DON’T: Touch Anything

>Don’t touch anything that could potentially pass along particles from the virus. Try not to buy anything, carry your own water bottle with you. And if you have to touch anything, press it with your sleeve to protect your hands.

DO: Give Yourself Space While Running

Be courteous of other people around you. Give yourself the needed space (six feet) while running. Actually, you should distance yourself at least twelve feet from people when running. You breathe faster when you are running, therefore spewing more molecules into the air.

DON’T: Go For a Run When Sick

Stay home. If you feel any symptoms at all, stay home. You could be at risk of spreading the disease if you go out for a run. Worse, you could also expose someone who is at high risk for the virus. Be considerate of yourself and other people.

DO: Go Outside to Exercise

Yes, running inside is an option as long as you have a treadmill. Still, you should always exercise outside when it is a nice day. Exercising helps lose weight, maintain mental health, and strengthens core muscles. Just because the gym is not open anymore does not mean that you can’t perform exercises outside. Get outside and run whenever you can.

DON’T: Stick to the Same Schedule

Sticking to the same schedule is boring. Instead of running along the same route every day, change it up. You can even jog in the opposite direction that you did yesterday. Getting stuck in a rut is easy to do, so avoid that. Include different routines across your week.

DO: Be Consistent

Make up a running schedule of your own. Now that most people are working from home, you should take a break. Go for a run in the morning or the late afternoon. Prepare your schedule so you get that run in.

DON’T: Forget your Phone

You never know what could happen. Have your phone on hand when going out for a run. While phones are great if you ever have an emergency, or at least you can track your run. There are many apps that can track your steps and calories. Aside from that, take your phone anyway to keep in contact with friends or family.

DO: Go for a Run with Family

While running with friends may not be the best option, go ahead and make a run with your family. Family is important. Remember, not everyone is at the same running speed as you are. Stay together, have fun, and relive stories.

DO: Have Fun

The world has not had it easy with the pandemic. Which does not mean that all fun activities should end. Enjoy the run. Take a selfie. During your break call up a friend who you have not talked to in a while. Stay safe, obey the rules, wear your mask, and make your run a fun adventure.
