Brilliant Ways to Keep Your Sleeping Bag Fresh and Warm

If you are like me, you are much likely to tug your sleeping bag away as soon as you get back from your camping trip and let it forget forever until you need it again for the next camping trip in Myanmar. High five and welcome to the club, by the way.
It is not a very good idea to leave your sleeping bag like that. It will shorten the lifespan of the sleeping bag insulation which may lead the sleeping bag unable to withhold the cold when you are out there camping. A sleeping bag may look good on the outside, but the insulation may be useless if you do not take care of your sleeping bag when it is not in use.
Here are the very simple tips you can do when you get back from your camping trip to keep the sleeping bag fresh and to let it live a longer lifespan.
Sleeping bag stuff sacks (the one that comes with your sleeping bag) are meant to carry your sleeping bag in the smallest and compact form when you travel or on your hike, but it is not meant to store your sleeping bag for a long time. So, when you get back from your camping trip – after you wash (if necessary) and dry – store it in a loose storage bag. For me, personally, a big pillowcase is the best. If space is an issue for you, try storing it under your bed and let it collect dust. 😛 (not a good idea for your sleeping bag to collect dust). If necessary, cover the pillowcase, aka your sleeping bag, with a plastic bag but be sure not to squeeze it too much to save space. Or be sure not to use the waterproof bag and seal it tight.
Tips for you: if your sleeping bag acts as a balloon when you try to stuff in a pillowcase or loose bag, try turning the sleeping bag inside out before stuffing.
Squeezing hard or compressing so tightly for long period is bad for your sleeping bag insulation. Your sleeping bag insulation is the main component to make you feel warm on your camping trip, so that be sure to take extra good care of it so that it will take good care of you when you are on your camping trip in Myanmar.
Keeping your sleeping bag clean is a good habit too. The first line of defense with cleaning your sleeping bag is to spot clean it. It will save you from spending too much time and energy.
Get soapy water (do not use strong detergent), dip a cloth or a toothbrush, and gently clean the outer shell of your sleeping bag. Focus your cleaning on the hood and collar where most dirt will collect from your skin oil.
Then try to pinch and hold the outer shell away from the insulation as much as you can and wash and rinse the area with water without getting the inside wet. (Yes, it may need some Zen-like mind and the surgeon’s hands. LoL)
If you think you might need to wash your bag thoroughly, you may wash it in a machine or by hand. Obviously, washing by hand will take away so much of good your camping memories. So we will emphasize washing with the help of a machine.
If you have a front-loading washing machine, it is the best. But if you are with a top-loading machine, make sure the machine is without the agitator (the tall vertical spindles of finned, in the center of your washer).
If you are ready to wash your sleeping bag with a washing machine:
- Always take a look at the labels for any specific instructions
- You should unzip the bag completely to prevent the slider from breaking
- Use a mild detergent (if you can get a special kind of sleeping bag washing solution, it is great) to clean out all those stains.
- Let the sleeping bag soaks through a gentle cycle
- Rinse it twice. If you notice that the bag feels spongy, put it through the rinse cycle once more. Sleeping bags should not feel drenched when coming out of the wash
- To avoid ripping out seams, support the entire bag when taking it out
- Squeeze out any excess water
For me personally, air drying my sleeping bag is the best. Only be sure not to dry it under direct sunlight. But if you have a dryer big enough for your sleeping bag to fit in, feel free to use it.
If you use a dryer make sure you set it on low heat. Dryer heat varies time after time, so check often. If it is too hot, the fabric, especially the insulations, can melt. So, please make sure it is not too hot.
You can make your insulation to become fluffy by putting one or two tennis balls into the dryer when your sleeping bag is nearly dry. If you cannot find the tennis balls, you may put a pair of your clean sneakers, if your family is ok to put the shoes inside the dryer or at least don’t let them see what you were doing. 😄)
The rule of thumb is after you wash, dry, and are ready to store your sleeping bag in a pillowcase or some other case, check the wear and tear on your sleeping bag. You may sew it if there is any tear on the inside. If there is a tear on the outer shell, the best way is to tape it up, or you can buy a sleeping bag repair kit at a pretty affordable price.
This is it! After doing all these I-only-want-to-do-camping-not-cleaning steps, you can now rest assured you will have a good-looking yet warm and cozy sleeping bag when you are ready to go camping once again.

အလွယ်ဆုံးအိတ်ကတော့ အိမ်မှာရှိတဲ့ ခေါင်းအုံးစွပ် ခပ်ကြီးကြီးပဲဗျ။ Sleeping bag လေးကို ခေါက် ၊ ခေါင်းအုံးစွပ်ထဲ ထည့်ပြီး သိမ်းထားလိုက်ရင် အိုကေပြီ။ နေရာ အခက်အခဲ ရှိရင် ကုတင်အောက်ထဲ ထည့်ပြီး ဖုန်တက်ခံထားလိုက်ပေါ့ 😛 (စတာ ၊ ဖုန်တက်လို့လဲ မကောင်းဘူးနော်။ ပလတ်စတစ်အိတ်လေးနဲ့ ဖွဖွလေးစွပ်ထားဖို့လိုရင်လဲ စွပ်ထားပေါ့။ လေလုံအောင် အပြီးပိတ်ထားတာလဲ သိပ်မကောင်းပြန်ဘူး။ သူကလဲ ချေးကခပ်များများရယ် 😅 )
Tips: Sleeping bag ကို သိမ်းဖို့ လိပ်တဲ့အခါ ပူစီဖောင်းလို ဖောင်းလာရင် sleeping bag ကို အတွင်းအပြင် လှန်ပြီး လိပ်ကြည့်ဗျ။ အဆင်ပြေသွားလိမ့်မယ်။
Sleeping bag ကို လျှော်ဖို့လိုလာပြီဆိုရင် ပထမဆုံး လုပ်သင့်တာက နေရာကွက်ကြား ထစ်ချုန်းမိုးရွာချသလို ၊ လိုတဲ့နေရာပဲ ကွက်ပြီး လျှော်လို့ရလား အရင်ကြည့်ပါဗျာ။ Sleeping bag တစ်လုံးကို အလုံးလိုက်လျှော်မယ်ဆိုရင် လက်နဲ့ မဟုတ်ပဲ စက်နဲ့ ဆိုရင်တောင် တော်တော်လေး ကိစ္စများတာဆိုတော့ ၊ ကွင်းကွက်ပြီး လုပ်လို့ ရမယ်ဆိုရင်တော့ အရင်ဆုံး ကွင်းကွက်ပြီးသာ ကစ်ဗျို့။
ကွင်းကွက်ပြီး spot clean လုပ်မယ်ဆိုရင်တော့ ဆပ်ပြာထည့်ပြီး အမြုပ်ထအောင်လုပ်ထားတဲ့ soapy water လေးကိုယူ (အဝတ်လျှော်ဆပ်ပြာ အပြင်းစားတွေတော့ရှောင်ပါဗျာ) ၊ အဝတ်လေးနဲ့ ဖြစ်ဖြစ် ၊ သွားပွတ်တံ အဟောင်းလေးနဲ့ဖြစ်ဖြစ် ၊ ညစ်ပတ်နေတဲ့ နေရာလေးတွေကို ပွတ်ပြီးလျှော်ပေးပါ။ လည်ကုတ်တို့ ခေါင်းစွပ်တို့လို နေရာတွေက ချွေး ၊ အဆီတွေကြောင့် ချေးတွေကပ်နေတာ များတော့ အဲ့ဒီနေရာလေးတွေကို ပါအောင် spot clean လုပ်ပေးပါဗျာ။
ဆပ်ပြာရည်နဲ့ spot clean လုပ်လို့ ဝ ပြီ ဆိုရင်တော့ ၊ ပွတ်ထားတဲ့ နေရာလေးကို အတွင်းက insulation မပါအောင် လက်လေးနဲ့ ဆိပ်ယူ ၊ အပြင်ခွံလေးကို ရေလေးနဲ့ ပြန်ပွတ်ဆေးပါဗျာ။ (အပြင်ခွံ့လေးပဲ ကပ်ဆိပ်ဖို့အတွက် လိုအပ်ရင် တရားအရင်ထိုင် ၊ ခွဲစိတ်ဆရာဝန်ဆီမှာ တွဲပြီးလေ့ကျင့်သင့်ကျင့်ပေါ့ 😁 ) အတွင်းကို ရေထိလို့ မရဘူးလားဆိုတော့ ၊ ရပါတယ်။ မလိုပဲ ရေမထိတော့ အခြောက်လှမ်းရ သက်သာတာပေါ့ 😋
Spot clean လုပ်လို့တော့ မလွယ်ဘူး။ Sleeping bag တစ်ခုလုံးက ချေးတွေ ထုနဲ့ဒေး ဆိုရင် လျှော်သာလျှော်ဗျ။ အားမနာနဲ့။ သိတဲ့တိုင်း လက်နဲ့ လျှော်ရင် ပိုပင်ပန်းမယ်လေ။ camping တုန်းက feel တွေတောင် ဘယ်ရောက်သွားလဲ မဖြစ်ရအောင် ဖြစ်နိုင်ရင်တော့ စက်နဲ့လျှော်ပါဗျာ။ စက်နဲ့ဆိုရင် အရှေ့ဖွင့်စက်လေးနဲ့ဆိုရင် ပိုကောင်းတယ်ဗျ။ အကယ်၍ အပေါ်ဖွင့်ဆိုရင်လဲ ပြဿနာတော့ မရှိပါဘူး။ အဝတ်ထည့်တဲ့ ခွက်ကြီးရဲ့ အလယ်အူတိုင်မှာ အရစ်တွေ ဖော်ထားတဲ့ တိုင်ကြီး (agitator) ပါ ၊ မပါသာ ကြည့်။ အဲ့ဒီ တိုင်ကြီးနဲ့ဆိုရင်တော့ မဖြစ်ဘူး။ ဆိုင်သာအပ်လိုက်ပါဗျာ။
ကိုယ်တိုင် လျှော်မယ် ဆိုရင်တော့
- sleeping bag အတွင်းမှာ ရှိတဲ့ label လေးကို ကြည့်ပါဗျာ။ အဲ့ဒီမှာ sleeping bag လျှော်ရင် လိုက်နာရမှာလေးတွေ ပါတတ်ပါတယ်။
- sleeping bag ရဲ့ zip တွေ အားလုံးကို ဖွင့်ပြီး စက်ထဲ ထည့်ပါဗျာ။

Sleeping bag ကို အခြောက်ခံဖို့ ဆိုရင်အကောင်းဆုံး ၊ ကျွန်တော်အကြိုက်ဆုံး ၊ ကတော့ လေသလပ်ခံပြီးသာ အခြောက်ခံတာပါ။ အချိန်တော့ကြာတယ် ၊ ဒါပေမယ့် သက်သက်သာသာနဲ့ အဆင်ပြေဆုံးပါပဲ။ အကယ်လို့ အိမ်မှာ sleeping bag ဆန့်တဲ့ dryer ရှိရင်တော့ သုံးလို့ရပါတယ်။ အပူချိန်တော့ သိပ်မများစေနဲ့ ခင်ဗျ။ ပူလွန်းရင် အတွင်းက insulation တွေ ပျော်သွားတတ်တယ်လေ။ စက်ကလဲ တစ်လုံးနဲ့ တစ်လုံး အလုပ်လုပ်တာ မတူလို့ လှည့်ထားတုန်း မကြာမကြာ အခြေနေလေးကြည့်ပေးဦးခင်ဗျ။ အကယ်လို့ sleeping bag ထဲက insulation တွေ ပွပွလေး ပိုဖြစ်ချင်တယ် ဆိုရင် ခြောက်ခါနီးလေးမှာ dryer ထဲကို tennis ball ၂ လုံးလောက် ထည့်လိုက်ရင်လဲ let the magic happen ပဲ။ Tennis ball ရှာမရဘူးဆိုရင်တော့ စီးနေတဲ့ sneaker အသန့် သာ အစုံလိုက် ပစ်ထည့်ထားလိုက် (အိမ်ကလူတွေသာ မတွေ့စေနဲ့ 😜 )
Sleeping bag ကို လျှော်လို့ ဖွပ်လို့ ၊ လှမ်းလို့ ပြီးလို့ မသိမ်းခင်လေးမှာ နောက်ဆုံးလုပ်လို့ရတာလေးက အပေါက်အပြဲလေးတွေ ရှိလား ကြည့်ကြည့်ဗျ။ သေးသေးရှိတုန်း ဖာထေးထားမှ တော်ကာကြတာ။ Camping လုပ်မှ တွေ့ရင် လူးရင်းလှိမ့်ရင်းနဲ့ အပေါက်ပြဲက ပိုကြီးလာဦးမှာလေ။
Sleeping bag ရဲ့ အတွင်းဖက်မှာ အပေါက်ရှိရင်တော့ ဘယ်သူမှ မမြင်ဘူး။ ကိုယ့်ဟာကိုယ်သာ ချုပ်တတ်သလိုချုပ်လိုက် ၊ အပြင်ခွံမှာ ပေါက်ရင်တော့ တိပ်လေးနဲ့ကပ်ပေါ့။ အပြင်ခွံဆိုရင်တော့ လွယ်လွယ်လေး ပြင်လို့ရတာ ရှိတယ်။ ကျွန်တော်တို့ဆီမှာ ရောင်းတဲ့ camping gear repair kit နဲ့သာ ဆော်လိုက်။ ဈေးလဲမကြီးဘူး ၊ အလုပ်လဲ မရှုပ်ဘူး။ ဗဲဒီးဂွတ်။
ကဲ … ဒီလိုသာ “camping ထွက်ရတာပဲ ကောင်းတယ်။ sleeping bag တော့ မဂရုမစိုက်ချင်” အဆင့်တွေ လုပ်ပြီးပြီ ဆိုရင်တော့ ကျွန်တော် အပေါ်မှာ ပြောခဲ့သလို ခေါင်းအုံစွပ်လေးထဲသာ ထည့်ပြီး အေးဆေး သိမ်းထားလိုက်ပေတော့ဗျာ။ နောက်တစ်ကြိမ် camping ထွက်ဖို့ဖြစ်လာရင် နွေးနွေးလေးနဲ့ ကွေးလို့ ကောင်းမယ့် sleeping bag က အဆင်သင့် ရှိနေမှာပါ။
